Finish & Trim Carpentry

SB Purpose’s Interior Carpentry Services

Crown, base, casing, paneling and rails — the interior carpentry that decides how finished a room looks.

ABOUT
THIS SERVICE

Finish carpentry is the last five percent of a build that people notice one hundred percent of the time. This category covers every piece of interior trim CB Carpentry installs — crown molding at the ceiling line, baseboard and shoe at the floor, casing around doors and windows, wainscoting and beadboard on the lower wall, and chair rails and picture rails between. Work is measured, cut and coped on site so profiles meet cleanly on walls that are rarely square.

WHAT WE INSTALL

Explore our full range of carpentry services for residential construction, renovation and repair across Massachusetts.

Crown Molding

Crown molding closes the joint where wall meets ceiling and gives a room its finished proportion. Profile choice is driven by ceiling height and the age of the house — a tall Victorian room carries a deep built-up cornice, a modern ranch reads better with a shallower single profile. Corners are coped rather than mitered wherever possible so joints stay closed when framing moves.

Baseboards

Baseboard protects the wall where it meets the floor and hides the expansion gap every flooring system needs. In older houses the floor is rarely flat, so base is scribed to follow it rather than fought with filler, and shoe or quarter-round closes the last few millimetres cleanly. Height and profile are chosen in proportion with the casing and any crown above.

Wainscoting & Beadboard

Wainscoting adds decorative wood paneling to the lower half of a wall and takes the wear hallways, stairwells, mudrooms and dining rooms get every day. Layouts are set out from the Centre of the wall so panel widths stay even and stiles land sensibly around outlets, switches and door openings. Both are capped with a rail and finished with base below.

Door & Window Casings

Casing covers the gap between the jamb and the rough opening and carries the visual weight of every door and window in the room. Reveals are set consistently, usually a quarter inch back from the jamb face, so light catches each opening the same way. Butt-and-block casing suits houses where nothing is square, because the head sits over the legs rather than relying on a perfect forty-five.

Chair Rails & Picture Rails

Chair rails and picture rails are functional and decorative wall moldings that divide a wall horizontally and protect the plaster behind furniture. Chair rail height is set from the room rather than a rule of thumb, adjusted to sit level with window stools and any wainscot cap below. Picture rail runs higher and lets artwork hang from hooks without putting a hole in the wall.

FINISH CARPENTRY, IN PRACTICE

Short answers to the questions that come up most often on interior trim work.

Common Finish Carpentry Problems

Open mitres at casing corners, base pulling away from a settling floor, caulk lines cracking along a crown run and nail heads telegraphing through paint are the four issues that come up most. Almost all of them trace back to how the trim was fastened and jointed rather than to the material itself.

When Interior Trim Needs Professional Attention

Trim that moves seasonally, doors that no longer close square within their casing, water staining at a window stool or panelling that has begun to delaminate are worth looking at before redecorating. In each case the trim is reporting a condition behind it — movement, moisture or a fixing that has failed.

Why Professional Finish Carpentry Matters

Finish work is judged at arm’s length in good light, so tolerances that pass elsewhere in a build do not pass here. A professional sets out reveals, heights and returns before cutting, keeps profiles consistent from room to room, and leaves the surface genuinely ready for paint rather than ready for filler.
